Women’s History Month FAQs

When is Women’s History Month?

arrow

In the U.S., Women’s History Month is celebrated in March to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8. In Canada, Women’s History Month is observed during October to coincide with People’s Day on October 18. The roots of Women’s History Month in the U.S. goes back to 1978, when Sonoma County, California designed a Women’s History Week to coincide with International Women’s Day. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8 National Women’s History Day, and in 1987, Congress passed a Joint Resolution marking the month of March Women’s History Month.

Why do we celebrate Women’s History Month?

arrow

Historically, the accomplishments of women worldwide have been largely overlooked. We celebrate National Women’s History Month to shine a light on the historical, political, societal, and cultural contributions of women in the U.S. since our country’s founding. On International Women’s Day, initiated and sponsored by the United Nations since 1975, the world celebrates the contributions and accomplishments of women from across the globe - the peacemakers, caretakers, scientists, teachers, and thought leaders - and highlights the plight of oppressed women everywhere. Celebrate Women’s History Month at work to show your team you recognize and value the contributions of women in the workplace - and beyond.

What is the 2022 theme for Women's History Month?

arrow

Every year, the National Women’s History Alliance designates a theme for Women’s History Month. In 2022, the theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” This theme pays tribute to the caregivers and frontline workers who continue to serve during the ongoing pandemic, and it recognizes the countless ways in which women from all cultures and walks of life have promoted hope and healing throughout history.
